Registan

Registan
Registan is the magnificent central square of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. It is the country's main attraction, renowned for its unique architectural ensemble of three madrasahs (Islamic schools). The square has existed for over 600 years, with some of its structures preserved in their original form since the 15th century.
Located in the heart of Samarkand’s old city, Registan is the focal point where all major roads converge. Every year, thousands of tourists visit Uzbekistan to witness this jewel of the Middle East with their own eyes.

Registan Today
Uzbekistan owes much of Registan’s present-day appearance to the Soviet authorities, who initiated the restoration of its cultural monuments. However, even after their construction, the madrasahs remained closed to religious education and other activities. The large-scale reconstruction of Registan was completed shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union. The lengthy restoration process was due to funding shortages and the painstaking efforts of scholars to piece together information about the exterior and interior decoration of the buildings.
During Uzbekistan’s independence, the square was further refined and brought to its modern state. Today, Registan serves as the venue for all major celebrations, concerts, and festivals in Samarkand. The most significant event, held twice a year, is the Sharq Taronalari international music festival. If you want to not only admire Registan but also experience a vibrant national show, it’s worth planning your trip around one of the major celebrations. Be sure to visit in the evening when the architectural lighting enhances the square’s beauty.
